The STM32WBA5xxx series offers multiprotocol, wireless, and highly energy-efficient devices that come equipped with a powerful yet low-power radio compliant to Bluetooth® SIG Low Energy 5.4 specifications. These devices can reach operational frequencies as high as 100 MHz. Featuring a 2.4 GHz radio, they support Bluetooth Low Energy, Zigbee, and Thread which allows the implementation of Matter based applications.
Built on Arm’s Cortex-M33 32-bit RISC core, these SoCs boast a single-precision floating-point unit (FPU) compatible with all Arm single-precision instructions and data types, along with a comprehensive set of DSP (digital signal processing) instructions and a memory protection unit (MPU) for enhanced security.
With fast memory options (up to 1 Mbyte of flash and up to 128 Kbytes of SRAM), numerous enhanced I/Os, and peripherals connected through AHB and APB buses to a 32-bit multi-AHB bus matrix, they offer robust performance. Security is a key feature, meeting TBSA (trusted-based security architecture) standards by Arm, with capabilities for secure boot, data storage, firmware updates, and secure firmware installation to protect code provisioning in production. These devices also support multiple levels of readout protection, debug unlock via password, and firmware hardware isolation with secureable peripherals and memories.
For memory and SRAM, they provide various protection mechanisms such as readout, write protection, secure areas, and hide protection. Enhancing security further, the devices include a range of peripherals like a fast AES coprocessor, a secure AES coprocessor with DPA resistance, a PKA (public key accelerator), a HASH accelerator, and a true random number generator. To protect against tampering and transient attacks, they feature active tamper detection and internal monitoring to erase secret data if an attack is detected, aligning with PCI standards for payment applications.
Hardware semaphores facilitate software process synchronization. The hardware suite also includes one 12-bit ADC (2.5 Msps), two comparators, a low-power RTC, timers for general purpose and motor control, and several communication interfaces (I2Cs, SPIs, SAI, USARTs, low-power UART), though availability varies by product.
The STM32WBA5xxx MCUs enahnced wirless performance and flexibility allow for the development of several products ranging from smart thermostats, tracking devices, smart chargers, headsets, power tools, and smart meters.
The STM32WBA5xxx devices are designed for operation in extreme temperatures, from -40 °C to 105 °C (with a 120 °C junction), powered by a 1.71 to 3.6 V supply. They support a wide array of power-saving modes to facilitate low-power application design.
